Moxico’s approach to sustainability is to embed environmental, social and governance factors into its strategy and operations, practise effective leadership and management within the organisation, and ensure effective communication and collaboration with the communities and people in the areas where it operates.
Moxico takes its sustainability responsibilities very seriously and places this at the forefront of its strategic thinking.
We believe that it is in the company’s best interests and those of all stakeholders to ensure operations are run in harmony with the communities and environments in which they are located. As such, it is not considered merely a matter of compliance, but as an integral part of operating effectively, maximising positive impact, and minimising and anticipating potential areas of conflict.
The effective implementation of these principles and practices is achieved by ensuring they run through the organisation, from the leadership down, and through regular contact and engagement with community leaders and representatives who are considered partners and key stakeholders in Moxico’s endeavours.
Environment
Central to Moxico’s business strategy is to focus on commodities that are deemed critical to delivering a cleaner and more sustainable future, such as copper. With regards to how it operates, Moxico has a strict policy of adhering at all times to applicable environmental laws and requirements, and is committed to minimising any impact of its operations on the environment.
Moxico recognises that mining operations can contribute to climate change and mining companies must seek to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from their operations. Moxico places environmental considerations at the heart of its business decisions on how to develop and operate the Mimbula copper mine and its future mines, opting for environmentally responsible mining and processing methods that have lower energy and water requirements and using predominantly renewable sources of energy such as hydropower. Around 90% of the electricity currently supplied in Zambia is from hydropower. Together with the copper cathode of 99.999% copper produced from the Mimbula Phase 1 mining operations, hence reducing transport emissions to the final customer, Moxico produces one of the lowest carbon intensive copper products in the world. Moxico has also submitted proposals to the Chingola District Forestry Office in Zambia for seeding to replant areas which have undergone deforestation.
In order to implement effective climate mitigation strategies, accurate accounting of energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions is needed. At Mimbula, daily, weekly and monthly data is monitored and collected in relation to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental performance including on energy and water usage. Beyond environmental matters, data is also collected in the areas of employment training, supply chain, community matters, and safety and health.
Community
Moxico believes in the necessity of having a positive social impact in the areas where it operates, with lasting effects that go beyond the life of its mines, and is committed to help build prosperous local economies with an improved environment and a better quality of life.
Understanding the local communities was amongst Moxico’s top priorities when the Group decided to invest in the Republic of Zambia. To that effect, Moxico contracted locally trained personnel to undertake a detailed survey of the communities local to the Group’s operations in Chingola and Mufumbwe. The data collected provided valuable insight into the specific challenges facing these communities and formed the basis of Moxico’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme and initiatives which have been ongoing from the outset of Moxico’s projects. Moxico is committed to expanding its social programme and initiatives as it pursues its growth.
The priority areas that Moxico supports as part of its community initiatives include healthcare, education and economic development.
Since 2020, Moxico has and continues to provide support to more than 20 cooperatives, including the Ntotobele and Bulobe cooperatives in Mufumbwe and the Kalengwa and Jibombo Multipurpose cooperatives in the Kalengwa area through donations of seeds and fertiliser. Over 200 people have benefitted from the donations and training programmes conducted by the Business Development Centre Zambia, an organisation dedicated to providing training and support to women, youth, and small and medium entrepreneurs with little or no formal entrepreneurial training and building the capacity of rural, underprivileged and women-owned businesses with the purpose of identifying opportunities to maximise social and economic development for the communities. These empowerment initiatives have contributed to the enhancement of small scale farming, including by equipping small businesses with management skills.
Moxico has also implemented a community empowerment initiative in the form of village banking in the area where the Mimbula mine is located, aimed at improving livelihoods through economic activities that are not reliant on mining. To date, 16 women cooperatives and their 144 members have benefitted from the village banking initiative and training scheme, allowing them to gain knowledge on how to manage a business and profits. For example, a cooperative member has been able to start a poultry business, allowing her to meet the school needs of her children. Another member has been brewing and selling drinks, providing her with the funding to extend and refurbish her house.
Other initiatives supported by Moxico for the benefit of its local communities in Chingola and Mufumbwe include drilling of boreholes and provision of water pumps for access to clean water, food donations to the Mufumbwe hospital, supporting multiple local traditional ceremonies and sponsoring of a number of community football clubs in Chingola and Kalengwa.
In addition, Moxico plans to build a medical facility in the Mimbula mine area to service its workforce at the Mimbula Copper Project and the community, and to implement a graduate training scheme for technical roles. Moxico has also pledged to rehabilitate the palace of Chief Chizela of Mufumbwe District.
For Moxico, collaboration with communities extends to its host nations’ governments at national, district and local levels and entails active engagement founded on transparency and good governance. Moxico is very proud of its economic contribution through the employment of people, use of local suppliers, and payment and collection of taxes.
Governance
Moxico has an unwavering commitment to maintaining best practice in governance and expects the highest standards of personal and professional behaviour from all of our directors, officers and employees throughout the organisation, as well as our joint-venture partners, suppliers and customers. Moxico has implemented a number of policies in this regard, including in respect of ethical conduct, anti-bribery and corruption, non-discrimination, health and safety, and workplace relations.
Moxico’s governance framework supports its overall mission to build long term sustainable success, including through the alignment of the objectives and actions of its board of directors, management and stakeholders. We strongly believe that the leadership’s attitude and behaviours set the tone for the entire Moxico workforce and for our external partners (including regulators, suppliers and joint venture partners), with such principles of behaviour conveyed throughout the organisation by way of formal and transparent policies and procedures.

Health & Safety
The health and safety of Moxico’s workforce and contractors is of paramount importance. We believe that all injuries are avoidable provided the correct procedures and protocols are followed.
Safety structures, policies and procedures are in place at Moxico’s operations to ensure all staff know their personal responsibilities and that safety matters remain at the forefront of every worker’s mind every day.
